Dundee Design Festival 2017

Dundee Design Festival 2017

In May the Dundee Design Festival (DDF) returned to West Ward Works – a former print factory – for a celebration of design and making. The 2017 festival theme was ‘Factory Floor’ and Old School Fabrications were appointed as exhibition designers for a second consecutive year to transform the vast industrial space into a festival venue.

We produced 25 colourful industrial steel tables of bold proportions and varying material finishes designed to present individual exhibits from studios, workshops and factories around the world in a coherent display. The festival included a series of workshops, performances, exhibitions and talks during an extended five-day run. We produced a range of accompanying exhibition infra-structure aimed at creating a friendly and distinctive space for visitors including: coloured window gels, a large three-dimensional logo form; bespoke exhibit display items; large partition screens; way-finding signage panels and steel benches.

This commission had many synergies with Old School Fabrication’s approach to exhibition design and production as DDF brought together 14 practitioners who are testing materials, exploring new techniques and combining new and traditional craft and industrial processes. These designers and artists included: Annika Frye, Ariane Prin, Chalk, Dawn Youll, Florence Dwyer, Foldability, Hilary Grant, James Rigler, Lynne MacLachlan, Studio Glithero, Studio Si-lo, Thing Thing and Trakke.
