Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art – Cut it Out

Cut and Paste – 400 Years of Collage was the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art’s 2019 summer exhibition. To assist in the promotion of the exhibition, Old School Fabrications were commissioned to design, build and install another thematically linked bespoke outdoor play space.

We took inspiration from a range of artists and artworks featured in the exhibition, in particular the many Dadaist and Surrealist Collages on display. The play space combined this imagery with crawl tunnels, slides, climbing frames, magnetic collage walls and other adventurous builds to create an attraction that pulled a large family audience to the exhibition.

It was also designed to double up as a venue for summer family workshops and creative events organised by the gallery’s Educational Department. The structures were easy to dismantle and were donated to local schools and nurseries to re-use.
