V&A Dundee – Rules of Play

Made from 200 giant toy blocks in a range of vibrant colour stains, the installation ‘Rules of Play’ by artist Gabriella Marcella was inspired by the pioneering work of Friedrich Froebel, who is known for promoting the notion that children can learn through games and interactive play.

Old School Fabrications were commissioned to source, machine, stain and construct a series of forms from 200 pieces of timber. Each plank was accurately dimensioned to the ratio of 1:3:15, then stained in five complementary tones. Gabriella was keen that no visible fixings were present to create the illusion the blocks were simply balanced on top of each other however they had to be secure enough to be safe. We enjoyed problem solving how best to achieve this and play our part in a fun and imaginative installation.

Gabriella intends to re-sue these blocks for future projects, using different configurations to create new pieces of work.
