Towering over 200 feet above Edinburgh, the Scott Monument is a magnificent Victorian Gothic tribute to Sir Walter Scott, Scotland's celebrated author. Tucked within this iconic structure is a compact museum space, accessible via a tight spiral staircase with over 100 steps.
In collaboration with Studio Arc, we were commissioned to undertake the construction design, fabrication, and installation of bespoke museum furniture for this unique space. The project involved creating four custom-designed pieces using contemporary materials that harmonize with the historic oak-paneled interior. These included black Valchromat with solid brass inlays, marbled Hi-Macs, and natural dark leather.
The new suite of furniture combines functionality and style, incorporating seating, glass display cabinets, touch-screen displays, and lightbox interpretation panels. Each piece was carefully engineered to dismantle into small sections, enabling transportation through the narrow spiral staircase and compact doorways—an intricate challenge that required precise planning and craftsmanship.
The completed furniture has revitalized the museum, enhancing its usability and enriching the visitor experience. It now serves as a dynamic and engaging platform to explore the fascinating history and enduring legacy of Sir Walter Scott and his monument.
